Note to self: do not start new workout regimen with Billy Blanks’s TaeBo for Beginners (Beginners, my ass). The good news is my knees did not buckle on my run, the bad news is I got in my car after my run and immediately went out to buy breakfast. I don’t think I’ll be able to get out of bed without it tomorrow.

In other news I had a delighful run/walk/run. I did actually run, I don’t think they’ll be using me as a slowmotion extra for the next Baywatch movie but I don’t think I embarassed myself. Ah well, Yasmine Bleeth will just have to do her own stunts.

I’d like to thank Mel for finding the running mix. I can just picture myself frantically running, trying to use my heart rate monitor, listen to music and do math both adding and subtracting to figure out 60 and 90 minute increments. It saved me a great deal of humiliation frustration.

In other news I’d like to send out a call for workout videos. I know many of you have favorites, I’d love to know what they are. I’m a video newbie, the only one I have is TaeBo.

I also (of course) want cautionary tales of what not to do. For example is yoga going to kick my ass too frustrate me as well? Help!

I worked out to Richard Simmon’s sweating to the oldies last night. I like his whole series of workouts. Another one I like (but can’t seem to locate at the moment) is Walk Away the Pounds. It’s a verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy low (but effective) impact video.

I have a Yoga video as well. I’ve had it for going on three years now and never broken the shrink wrap exterior. BUT, I did go to a yoga class a few months ago for the first time. Kicked. My. Ass.

If we just hang in there, we’ll eventually find the right balance. I’m convinced of that. 🙂

Laura, I don’t know about the whole sweating to the oldies thing. Richard Simmons is a little too enthusiastic for me. Just watching him makes me tired. On the other hand I don’t think I can make it through another session of TaeBo!

I really like yoga, but I wouldn’t recommend starting with a video. IMO, you really need a real person to watch you and correct you for the first little while so that you can get the form right. That said, I do have a yoga video I like that’s about medium intensity. It’s Seane Corn’s Vinyasa Flow Yoga.

YOU are better off doing intervals as cardio and lifting weights, my dear. when you lift weights you burn extra cals for up to 72 hrs after – I’ve got some awesome workout plans where you don’t need a lot of weights some barbells….email me if you are interested.

The Magic Circle DVD…it’s Magic and Circular…

Good for you Carbkiller. I like my Yoga DVDs. A person is better though but can be expensive here in NY so I go for the dvds. I so need the breakfast of champions today. That truck that hit Mel ran by me last night. I’m going to try and get in some movement today though. saying it here may make it true.

Question. How can I find the running music mix, Mel? I’ve been watching the clock on the Treadmill. Thanks.

  7. Hogzilla says:

KJ–I downloaded the podcast straight from iTunes. I went to the iTunes store and searched Couch to 5K and then listened to several of them until I found a couple I liked. (zach snyder has the hiphop one) It’s free and you can subscribe to the podcast and it will load into iTunes for you..then all you have to do is load them to your iPod

  8. KJ says:

Thanks Mel I’m going to check it out.

  9. I’m a bit of an infomercial junkie, and I have lots of exercise DVDs. I used to have a fair amount of VHS, too, but I got rid of those a few years ago.

I’ll tell you the truth, I hate Walk Away the Pounds, not because they’re bad workouts, because they’re really pretty good especially if you’re just starting out, I hate them because Leslie Sansone annoys the shit out of me. I just wanted to put my foot through the television after a while to get her to STFU. In all fairness, most video exercise instructors talk a lot, but the combination of her grating voice and the “spiritual” tripe that’s she’s spewing half the time just don’t do it for me.

For good strength training, you can’t go wrong with The Firm; those women will kick your ass and in the end, you’ll thank them for it.

Me again. Thanks for that Mel. I’m loving the music on Chubby Jones. But can only get week 4 for some reason. I’ll have the DH work on it when he gets home. I love that it’s free!

  11. Hogzilla says:

he’s probably only up to week for in his own training. He’ll keep posting weekly podcasts each week, so check back next week to see if he’s added week 5!

  12. KJ says:

I worked it out. I was trying to get week one. Got it and it’s a she and it’s good. Check it out. I could not go for the rap.

Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds 3-Mile Walk. Yes, she’s annoying. However, the moves are clearly visible and not complicated so you can do as I do – turn off the sound and turn on the ipod.

The yoga DVD I have is Yoga Zone, I think Beginning Yoga or Introduction to Yoga. It’s decent. You won’t hurt yourself. You won’t get quite as much from it as you will from a yoga class, though, because the instructors assume knowledge of things like tadassima (mountain pose), which on the video comes off as just standing up straight but is in actuality an all-muscles-engaged posture that involves tightening or pulling your muscles in (my yoga instructor calls it “pull your muscles against your bones”) and really firmly planting your feet – things like that. If you have a chance to take a free yoga class – sometimes local studios will offer free clinics, ie mine this weekend is having an artist’s festival and is giving a free yoga and pilates class and I am SO taking advantage. If you have the opportunity to take even one class, it’d be worth it. 🙂 <3 yoga.

I strongly advise against Buns of Steel. The way you end up with Buns of Steel is someone drives a couple of steel spikes through your buns. You will also have to give up walking.

I haven’t yet gotten too into it, but I am trying kettlenetics. There are weights involved which is nice. I don’t know. I am not all that big on DVDs. The truth is that I need to throw the money to a personal trainer usually. I like the attention and then I actually do it.

I also have a few yoga DVDs, but I have taken yoga classes on and off and so I don’t know if you can do them without that background. I would imagine that you can, but there are some yoga accoutrements that come in handy if you are brand new to the practice.

  15. Hello. Great job. This is a great story. Thanks!
