I originally thought this was going to be an anonymous venture where nobody knew who we were. Then it occurred to me (probably around the same time it occured to HZ) that our friends already know we’re fat so why would we hide the diet and exercise part? So here we are.

Our official start date is Sunday, Oct 26th. I promised HZ she’d have one last night of beer before we start kicking each others butts, I figure that’s fair. That being said I do have one serious problem. I need shoes.

I have pants and shirts and socks and sportsbras, oh my! But I need shoes.

New Balance discontinued my 857s *sob* so if anyone else has had a religious experience regarding their running shoes please share!

Otherwise I’m going to go to a local running shop or two and report back. Might as well spread the knowledge wealth, as it were.

  1. Yay! See how fun is this? You get to be healthy and go shoe shopping! It doesn’t get any better than this 🙂

I’m going to the New Balance store to get properly fitted. Maybe you should do something like that?

  3. Kristen says:

Don’t the Ethiopians run barefoot? Think of all the calluses you’d get rid of that way.

  4. Hogzilla says:

I don’t think I want Dana running barefoot in LA. LOL!

  5. CarbKiller says:

I am so not running barefoot in LA. *shudder*

I always come back to my trusty Adidas.

I’ve tried a few others (saucony, new balance, nike) and Adidas just work for me.

Go to the running store and let them watch the way your foot strikes and help you pick a shoe. And don’t balk at the price; good shoes that are right for your feet are worth any price you pay. Trust me on this.

  8. Hogzilla says:

thank you, Connie! That’s great advice. I know good shoes are worth the price…even if I cringe when I see the $$ my dogs will be happy with the results.

Okay, as a long time runner (but no more) and now a long-distance walker, shoes are like sex and chocolate but for your feet and not messy and no worries about zits on your butt. Make that work.

Go to a small, independent shoe store, not a big store. They’ll watch you walk, they’ll watch you run a short bit, and they’ll examine the shoes you already have. If they don’t do this, GO TO ANOTHER STORE. it’s imperative you have good shoes. (And they’re usually a half size larger than what you normally wear.)

My current love affair is with Brooks, the Hurricane. It’s perfect for someone that stomps when they walk, which is me. It has shock absorbers in the heel that don’t hyper-extend your heel, which isn’t easy to find. Also, they cost less than my earlier shoe, Mizuno, by about 50 bucks. (Brooks are 80ish, Mizunos about 130 and up. !!)

thanks for popping in Stoney. I definitely need a good pair of shoes and was thinking of prostituting myself this weekend so I can buy a new pair. I do know how important they are. I bought the wrong pair a couple of years ago and wound up with chronic back pain for 3 months. As soon as I figured out the shoes were the cause, I got a new pair and AMAZING THINGS HAPPENED. (okay my back stopped hurting. Whatever. Felt amazing at the time…)

Okay, Road Runner. It’s a store chain – small – but GREAT! You join their “club” for a one time fee and then you get 10% off of any thing in the store. They totally fit your feet and you walk over a little pad to see how hard you walk, they film you walking on a treadmill (or running in your case) and then they measure your foot and arch. PLUS there is a 60 day guarantee and they want you to wear the shoe and bring it back if it doesn’t work for you. Then they fit you again and you get the full credit from the pair you brough back.

    ROAD RUNNERS!
