I. Am. Stuck.

Three days ago I was 100% ready to face off against the Los Angeles Half Marathon in Feb 2009. Turns out Feb doesn’t have a Half Marathon so now I’m a wannabe runner without a goal. I need a goal. But there are so many options. Who knew there were this many zillion Marathons in Southern California? I sure as heck didn’t!

What I really want is to do the Marine Corps Marathon series. So many hot guys, so little time! I’d only have the hotness for the first five or ten minutes of the race, though. Then all the guys would find their rhythm and smoke my pace leaving me with no eye candy with 26 miles to go. Um…pass.

So other options are listed HERE (and believe it or not those aren’t even all the marathons in Southern California!)

I think I’ve narrowed it down to several options.

Things to consider first.

1) According to my conversation at the runner’s store it takes 6 months to get fit enough to run a half marathon. I am not currently fit. And I’m a whiner so I’m going to need all the time I can get.

2) HZ turns 40 in March and even though I really want to run the half marathon in May that would leave her all by her lonesome as guinea pig for the first race. That doesn’t seem fair so in the spirit of blogging sisterhood I’m going to try to find something Feb/March-ish.

3) I’m pretty sure I could do a half marathon in March if I push myself. There just aren’t any near me.

So what do I do? I have no idea so this is where you all vote. Choose one of the following options and explain your logic. I haven’t figured out how to set up a survey on the blog yet. (sorry)

DO I:

1) Sign up for the Surf City Half Marathon Feb 1st even though that gives me about three months to train and I’ve been warned it could take six.

2) Sign up for the Surf City 5K on Feb 1st because by then I will have completed couch to 5K.

3) Sign up for the Rover Rescue! The caption reads: Run/Walk the Los Angeles Marathon or 5K in support of Rover Rescue. Help save the lives of homeless dogs! I am a total doglover and that would be awesome motivation. Date  Feb. 16. So I can’t run the half marathon because it doesn’t exist but I could do the 5K!

What would you do if you were me?

I say go for the 5K in February and then keep training for a half-marathon. I won’t be alone, I promise.

I’m tossing between, Rover Resue, since it’s a cause and Surf City… Does that one stop by the beach, because after a run like that, I’d wanna take a dip. 😀

  3. Ciara says:

Rover Rescue!! A 5K is a great goal – challenging yet reachable. Sounds like a great cause to support. You can feel good body and soul. 🙂

A 5 K is nothing to sneeze at! And you can use that as your mini goal and look for a half in March/April. From personal experience, its best not to rush, at the risk of getting frustrated and slacking or quitting, or causing bodily injury from over-training on not-yet-ready legs (& feet!).

The benefit of running a smaller, shorter race first is that it is a HUGE confidence booster and will help get you mentally prepared for the long haul!

The half-marathon you were going to do was in February anyway, just a few weeks later. I think if you could’ve been ready for that, you could make yourself ready for it a few weeks earlier.

But I also love the Rover Rescue idea.

I know, not a big help but I guess it comes down to how important it is to you to participate in a half marathon and whether you think you can be ready in time. But if you’re going to do a 5K race, I say go for the Rover Rescue over the Surf City one.

    Good luck! 🙂

Truthfully, if I were you, and I’m not, I’d be crazy and go for both Surf City and Rover Rescue. They’re 2 weeks apart, and once you’re done with Couch to 5K, the distance will be a normal one for you. Surf City will get your feet wet as far as racing goes, and then you use Rover Rescue as a training run and see if you can’t improve your time.

And, the more races you enter, the more hot running guys you’ll be exposed to. That can’t be a bad thing.

I like the idea of the Rover Rescue run. The way I would look at it is, even though it’s scheduled earlier than you think you would be ready to take on a run, this one is run/walk. It will give you an idea of well fit and ready you are to take on a bigger run. And it give you the opportunity to walk if the need arises. And of course I’m a real dogger lover and I think it’s a great cause.

  8. Amie says:

I totally think you should do the Rover Rescue!! Its’ for a good cause 😀

  9. KJ says:

I say go for the Rover Rescue. For all the reasons above.

  10. Loribelle says:

Can you find a 10k? If not, go for the Rover Rescue. 🙂

  11. Sabrina says:

5k is a good mini goal then go for the Rover!

  12. Mia says:

Anotehr vote for Rover Rescue and then sign up for the Agoura Hills 1/2 Marathon at the end of March which at least gives you 5 months of training.

  13. Elaine says:

Let me see…..In the Rover Rescue to you run with “hot” dogs? I’d frankly look around to see if there’s a fireman’s half marathon. Now, there’s hawt.

  14. CarbKiller says:

    Elaine you are so right!

  15. […] Most people agreed I should just do the Surf City Race. (So yes, I’m also blaming all of you). […]
