Okay I was trying to keep today a totally vanilla blog day but I can’t help myself (sorry HZ). What is it with our celebrity fascination? I mean I read PerezHilton.com so I’m by no means innocent but come ON. Why are fires especially horrific when celebrity homes are threatened?

For example, three days ago there was a collective *gasp* in Hollywood when Montecito was threatened. Oprah’s house in danger! the headlines shouted. Give me a break Oprah’s house is in Chicago where she tapes The Oprah Show. Now, do I feel badly about her home being threatened? Absolutely. Fire is a terrifying thing. However, I do get a little nauseous when I hear about Oprah’s house (which was fine, by the way) and then as an aside hear about an entire mobile home park that was completely decimated. The pictures are horrifying and I cannot begin to imagine the horror of knowing everything you ever owned is now up in smoke. And you can bet a bunch of those people probably don’t have insurance.

Now I’m not saying this is Oprah’s fault, when the fire initially started in Sylmar that was the only headline because it was the only fire. Then the Corona fire exploded in Orange County and all bets were off.

You know what else makes me sick? TV reporters. An exausted-looking firefighter agrees to do an interview on camera. Big mistake. Now the reporter’s single most important job in life is to keep that poor guy on screen with the stupidest questions known to mankind.

Reporter: Sir, is there anything you’d like to say to the families from the (2nd) mobile home park whose property is being threatened?

Now call me crazy, and I’ve never lived in a mobile home, but you can bet your ass those residents don’t give a crap about soundbites. They want that guy out there fighting fires, or resting so he doesn’t injure himself trying to fight fires later. What they do NOT want is for him to stand there trying desperately to keep his *do not cuss at this stupid clown* look on his face as he says in a very somber voice.

Firefighter: Yes, we would like all the residents of the mobile home park to know we are committed to helping them and all our resources are available for that effort.

And then of course, there are the followup questions.

Reporter: How do you feel about this situation?

Me thinking: Did she REALLY just say that? Surely she’s not that stupid. And then I see the total lack of expression on the firefighter’s face and think those Nobel Prize people have been nominating the wrong people for the Peace Prize. Bono never has to put up with this shit.
