Sigh.

I am so behind on my training. I’m wondering if maybe I should make my March goal a 10 K instead of a half-marathon? I didn’t even take the holidays and my writing deadline into account when I set this lofty goal.

And now, I may be starting a part-time job.

Am I a failure or a let down if I shift my goals somewhat?

My husband said to me the other day “I think you set yourself up with too high of expectations so that you can fail, so you can quit. ‘Cuz that’s easier.” I had to agree with him. My goal is to run the whole 5K in mindblowingly freezing weather. But after running outside the other day, I’m not sure I can do it! So my adjusted goal is I’m gonna run half. At leats half of it. I f I can do more – awesome.

You’re not a failure if you aren’t quitting. If you said “I’m not doing this anymore.” Then you fail at your goal. But adjusting it down -whic hIMO is way more realistic, that’s why I did a 5K, to me makes more sense. You might be setting yourself up for something so high, it may not be the motivator you thought it was going to be. Now it becomes this insurmountable task you begin to dread.

Adjust it. Do a 5K. Then do a 10K. Work up to the goal of a half marthon. You’re just delaying it a bit for when you know you will be more sucessful.

    Hugs.

  2. failure? No. But Cinde’s answer is on target.

Remember, you’re doing this FOR YOUR HEALTH, not for one race.

  3. If you need to readjust your goals to something that you can do without a huge disruption in your current lifestyle, then that’s not failure. That’s adapting so that you can can still find success in your situation.

Well, there’s your overall goal of better health, and then there are the benchmarks. Adjust those benchmarks when you need to, so that your overall goal doesn’t become freakin’ overwhelming. Just sayin’.

at least you’re still running. I’m just a huge failure right now *sigh* In my defense I had HORRIBLE PMS last month–which is really no defense at all but it’s all i got 🙁

Honestly, if something’s got to give so you’re not feeling stressed and overwhelmed, the marathon would be the thing that should go. Aside from that, I agree with what’s been said by the others. You’re not doing this for just one race so if you need to modify your goal, then that’s what you do. Doesn’t make you a failure at all.

You are not a failure. Maybe a 10K or 5K is a more realistic goal.

If you try quitting that I’m going to come to LR and beat you up though.

    Just sayin’

You are only a failure if you quit running. Just keep running and adjust your goals. Go for the 5K first. It’s understandable that life gets in the way sometimes. Make the focus to keep moving forward.

I’m feeling stress because we’re about to get on the read for Savannah tonight so I know there will be no running this week. It will feel like I’m starting fresh when I return next week. It will be a challenge to get back on the horse.
