I’m not worried yet because it’s not swollen. But last night when I went to bed, my knee was hurting. This morning when I put weight on it, I almost collapsed from the pain. Now that I’ve been moving and worked out some of the stiffness it’s better, but it still hurts.

Hello Advil, welcome back to my bloodstream. We’ve missed you.

It’s probably nothing. I’m sure it’s my body adjusting to the knew shoes and the new jarring activity of my faux-jog but I’m still going to keep an eye on it. It’s really not fair what I’m doing to my legs. Expecting them to carry this extra weight around in a faux-jogging fashion. But if they will stick with me, they’ll realize they extra weight will be dropping soon.

So:

Dear Knees and other assorted body parts,

I know you’re almost 40 years old and I know you were hoping that my lazy streak was going to continue all the way through the triple digits of our life. But here’s the thing–if I stay lazy, chances are we won’t live into the triple digits. And if we do, at the rate of my laziness, we’ll need a flatbed truck to cart us everywhere. Frankly, I don’t think the Hover-Round people are planning to make something comparable to a flatbed so we’d be stuck.

I don’t wanna be like that.

Do me a favor and just cut me some slack. I’d very much like it if you’d let me continue my faux-jogging so that I can complete the half-marathon. I doubt I’ll ever want to run another one after March 15, 2009, okay? After that date, I’ll stick to 5Ks. Deal?

I need you to play nice with the Advil and then stop with the pain. Mmmkay?

Your Owner,

Hogzilla

Think my body bought it?

I think your knee needs ice.

  2. Ouch! Ice it for 20 minutes every hour until the swelling goes down.

I’ve tried the talking to body parts about behaving. They just laugh at me and do what they want.

It’s not swollen, it’s just stiff and a little pained. But maybe I’ll ice it down, just to be safe…

Our trainer recommended us to freeze water in small dixie cups… then take them and rub them on the swollen and pained areas for a min of 8 solid minutes rubbing in circles do this to both legs even if one is not hurting. Should be done no longer than 30 mins after your run.

Also check out you tube search how to tape your shin — they have a video on the proper method of taping your shin when you run – it gives you extra support.

    Hoope this help.

Just an FYI— the above mentioned dixie cup method should actually be used on your legs after every run — even when not in pain… this helps it from happening too….

Ow ow ow. I’m so sorry. If you want to ice you might want to try frozen peas wrapped in a thin dishtowel.

    It works for me.

  7. KJ says:

Good luck. Yes, try the above. Ouch.

  8. Jodie says:

ouchy! Rest as much as you can. Hope it’s all right by the next time you run…

  9. Cholsted says:

OK Mel – you are supposed to inspire me to run. 2 months ago I promised my SIL that I would run the marathon relay w/ her (its only 6 miles). I have only been once or twice since that promise.

Your pain does not inspire me!

Seriously, I hope you feel better soon.

  10. Hogzilla says:

Thanks everybody. The knee pain was gone by noon yesterday. I took more Advil just to make sure…woke up this morning just fine. I’m continuing on today with Week 2. Will report in later!

Cholsted, get off your butt and get moving. That’s an order
