I think being a Fat Chick is a state of mind not just the state of ass. (though, I can assure you, the state of my ass is pretty damn fat right now.) Training for a half or whole marathon will not be easy no matter what your size is.

With that in mind, let me invite you to join us. Even skinny chicks are welcome. Because this is a goal we’re marching toward and the more the merrier.

Oh and we welcome the male species as well. Could be fun to get the testosterone side of things…but you have to be man enough to participate on a blog called Fat Chicks because we ain’t changing it. Just leave us a comment on the blog if you’re interested in participating on this blog or if you’re planning to follow along and document on your blog. And you know, you could always follow the program without blogging at all. Just comment occasionally. It’s up to you.

Now onto my state of mind:

I can’t believe I’m excited about this venture. Seriously. I can’t wait to get started. But I’m going to wait because 1: I need a new pair of shoes 2: I have a chili party to attend tomorrow and I plan on drinking copious amounts of booze.

Yes, I’m going to miss the booze. I’ll admit it. I’ve been doing some research on a runner’s diet and guess what? Booze is a no-no. Not that I’ll give it up forever (hah! As if!) but I figure if I want to succeed at this half marathon thing, then I’ll need to temporarily give up the liquid gold.

The good news is a runner’s diet is a high carb diet and that excites me. LOL Actually, for a brief moment or two, I had almost convinced myself I could continue drinking beer while training because it’s a carbohydrate. Unfortunately, it’s not a complex carb and sadly, it goes straight to my hips and thighs.

I’m headed to the New Balance store this weekend to get fitted for an appropriate shoe. I have a wide foot and I tend to over-pronate <–that’s a fancy word for walk on the outside of my feet. I’m hoping the NB folks can hook me up because there is nothing that will stop a successful training faster than the wrong shoes. (I can always tell they’re not right because my lower back starts to hurt. Ouch)

Okay gang…T-minus 3 days. Who’s gonna join us?

I can’t join you, but I can provide you with a little inspiration: if you keep the running going, maybe next year you can run here!

One of my students is running in this event Sunday (his number is 55 – watch for him!), and it’s going to be a beautiful site for a run – along the river and into Venice itself.

    Top *that*, L.A.! Heh, heh…!

    Ciao, e buona fortuna!

guess I should get a passport, just in case, huh?

  4. slindylou says,

I am very tempted. I’ve tried this venture once and failed miserably so I’m pretty scared. But the idea of new shoes sounds good!

  5. Dianna says,

I’ll join you guys!! The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is April 26th. It is something I’ve always wanted to do. A friend of mine and I were going to sign up for the 5K walk, but I guess I can run it. Do women with FF bra size run?

  6. Hogzilla says,

slindylou–c’mon down! even if you don’t finish the actual race, it’s not a failure. I think if we can get a large motivated group just to start moving and working toward a similar goal…it’s a total success!

Yay Dianna! I think we should have a goal to get at least 1 person from every state to participate! How awesome would that be?

    dated October 23, 2008 at 12:54 pm

  7. CarbKiller says,

slindylou you should totally join! We’re all in this together so even though it will no doubt be painful at least we’ll be laughing! (And we’ll have each other!)

Dianna, that’s fantastic! FF women do run, just double up your sportsbras and start out slow. I’m starting at DD so I’m not far behind. I’m adding the OKCity Marathon to our list on the sidebar.

HZ, you’re brilliant as always I wonder if we can nab at least one person from every state. That would be awesome!

    Anyone else?

  10. CarbKiller says,

Fair enough Annmarie, but I should warn you this is a high energy place. Enjoy your Buffalo fingers and fries while you can because we’re going to convince you to join us eventually!

I’m *tentatively* going to say I’m in because I”m a chicken and it’s COLD in the morning :D

    dated October 23, 2008 at 1:33 pm

  12. CarbKiller says,

Amie, it is also possible to run in the evenings. It sucks, but it’s possible.

  13. Emma Petersen says,

Amie sent me this link earlier. Running? I honestly don’t think I’ve ever ran in my life. I’d love to join you but I just don’t see it happening. If I can ride my bike along side of you guys I’m totally in.

    dated October 23, 2008 at 3:16 pm

  14. Hogzilla says,

Walk with us then, Emma! or Ride that bike!

  15. Maria says,

How about if I walk real fast? Will that count?

    dated October 23, 2008 at 4:30 pm

  16. Hogzilla says,

absolutely! So Maria, does that mean Florida is represented?

    dated October 23, 2008 at 4:32 pm

  17. Feisty says,

I’m bummed because I would be all over this if I hadn’t broken my leg. But yeah. Me and running? Not so much. However! I will jump on the sobriety wagon with you! God, did I just say that?? Not today, though. I have book club.

  18. Ayla says,

Umm i’ll give up alcohol with ya! (totally tee total already haha)

No seriously. there’s no way i can run a half marathon with my asthma, but i do need to exercise/lose weight so i’ll join in.

I think i count for Wales though…this is gonna be interesting. *scared*

PS i also need trainers but i’m a student with no money. any ideas on how to get a decent pair for less than my soul?

    dated October 23, 2008 at 6:05 pm

  19. Amie says,

Ayla…you might try Marshalls (or Ross). Also our footlocker has a clearance store where everything is 50% off. You might check to see if there’s one near you.

    >>It sucks, but it’s possible.

Running in the evening….possible time away from children. Less mayhem and blood. Running in the morning…definite time away from children. Cold

    Huh. Will mull :D

  20. Laura says,

Yesterday someone at lunch told me she was training for the Houston half marathon in January. Then the two ‘zillas here mentioned it when I got home. THEN, today another friend told me they were training for a half marathon. Is there a memo I missed? Was it in one of those emails I’ve been ignoring. I’m a little jealous. And I totally would love to join but the Houston marathon is closed for registration. Little Rock is close enough I could probably do that one but would it count as Texas or Arkansas representation?

    dated October 23, 2008 at 8:17 pm

  21. Hogzilla says,

TEXAS baby. That’s where you live…that’s where you represent! :) Join us, Laura! C’mon!!!

  22. Maria says,

I love you both and think that you are incredibly — hmm, is this a family site?

I have already filled my quotient of insane physical challenges with the 3 Day Breast Cancer walk this November. So, the half marathons are out!

My goal for 2009 is to focus totally on writing. If I am doing anything extra it will be writing and that is it. I will be walking still and will be throwing in some Yoga, but there will be no insane physical training.

I still love you both and will be cheering you on like mad. I may possibly even go and watch CK run her 1/2 marathon, but until I recover from walking 20 miles for three consecutive days…. Let’s just say there’s a hot place freezing over and leave it at that.

    dated October 23, 2008 at 11:38 pm

  23. CarbKiller says,

Whatever Maria, you’re walking for THREE days, unless I decide to start running ultramarathons you’ll always be crazier then us!

    dated October 24, 2008 at 12:01 am

  24. Jodie says,

    I’m gonna do it.

I’m gonna do the couch 2 5k challenge starting next week..

check out these pod interval trainer downloads: http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html

Thats me, I’m gonna see if in 9wks i can fun 5km/3.2miles in 1 shot… this is exciting.

    dated October 24, 2008 at 12:37 am

  25. Hogzilla says,

    yay Jodie! Welcome!

and Maria…you’re crazier than I am…a 3 day walk sounds infinitely more painful than a 13 mile ‘run’. It’s in quotes because my run is more like a lurch and a lumber. :)

  26. Loribelle says,

D@mn. Y’all are gonna make me start running again, aren’t you? I might be up for a 10k in the spring, but definitely not a half. Course I’ll have to quit drinking. And smoking. Y’all are evil, but I’m still tempted.

    dated October 24, 2008 at 7:18 pm

  27. Hogzilla says,

Yep. we’re gonna make you. Smoke that last butt and guzzle that last beer…and join us! Tonight’s my last booze night for a while… so I’m partying like a rockstar!

    dated October 24, 2008 at 8:07 pm

  28. CarbKiller says,

Join us Loribelle! If anything you’re the former military chick, we need your expertise!

  29. Rhonda says,

dude, i can’t run because of crappo knees, but i’ll join ya with walking, if you’re still taking people! :D
